A Sound Mind

Nicole Lossie

Fasting Devotional – Day Thirteen

Title: A Sound Mind

Text: II Timothy 1:7

Written by: Nicole Lossie

“For God hath not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of sound mind.”  (II Timothy 1:7, KJV)

Thoughts

This verse is taken from a letter from Paul to Timothy while he was helping to build and guide the early church.  He was faced with unbelievers, false teachers, and much conflict, but Paul writes to encourage him to stay the course.  Could you imagine being charged with such a task?  I assume that one could easily surrender to fear in those circumstances.  Paul reminds Timothy (and us) that God has given us authority with His power and love to keep us from being crippled by fear.

As a mom of small children, I get occasional visits in the middle of the night when they wake up from a scary dream.  One night, it seemed like there was nothing I could do to help calm one of my little ones.  Exasperated and exhausted, I thought, “Lord, I’m tired, help me out here.” I was led to have my kiddo repeat after me “Scary thoughts get out of my head, Jesus keeps me safe and I don’t need to be afraid.”.  We would say it over and over until they were able to proclaim it boldly with a smile on their face.  This has become our routine procedure this year, and I kind of went through the motions of daily routines and didn’t think much of our little mantra.

I've been in a season of sick kiddos, tight budgets, temperamental car issues, and so many other things that have a tendency of piling up, weighing me down and stressing me out.  It can be so easy to let anxiety take over. The spirit of fear is a real thing, and it can wreak havoc in our lives if we let it.  We have to remember that our good Father has given us authority over our fear, stress, and anxiety.

Challenge

Listen to the song “Sound Mind” by Melissa Helser.  You can find it on YouTube, Spotify or Amazon.  Here are some of the lyrics:

In the chaos, You are the peace, In my suffering, You're here with me,  In the darkness, You never leave, God of Mercy, You're walking with me, I surrender anxiety, All the striving has to cease, In this moment, You're still the King, This is the gift You are giving to me, A sound mind for the spirit of fear, A sound mind so that I can see clearly, A sound mind, Your Spirit is here, A sound mind, a sound mind”

Examine the areas in your life that you need to apply this mentality.  Has the spirit of fear worked it’s way into your mind? How?

Prayer

Father God, thank you so much for the gift of a sound mind.  I pray over the person reading this that they experience peace of mind that only you can provide.  Thank you for giving us authority over the spirit of fear.   Help me to remember that your love rules over all and help me to be a peaceful light to those around me.
