Shift Your Thinking

Brian Lambert

Fasting Devotional – Day Eighteen

Title:  Shift Your Thinking

Text:  Philippians 4:8

Written by:  Brian Lambert

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 What you have learned[e] and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.” (Philippians 4:8, ESV)

Thoughts

The way we think shapes the way we live. Paul’s words in Philippians 4:8 challenge us to shift our thinking to align with God’s truth. He encourages us to focus on what is true, noble, pure, and praiseworthy, rather than dwelling on negativity, fear, or lies. This isn’t just positive thinking—it’s transformational thinking rooted in God’s Word.

The mind is a battleground, and the enemy often seeks to fill it with doubt, worry, and discouragement. But as followers of Christ, we are called to take captive every thought and make it obedient to Him (2 Corinthians 10:5). A shift in thinking happens when we replace the lies of the world with the truth of God's Word. This renewal of our minds transforms us and helps us discern God’s will (Romans 12:2).

During this season of fasting and prayer, consider what dominates your thoughts. Are they aligned with God’s truth, or have you allowed negativity and distractions to take root? Shifting your thinking allows God to transform your perspective, bringing peace and clarity.

Challenge

Pay attention to your thoughts today. When you catch yourself dwelling on fear, doubt, or negativity, pause and redirect your mind to the truth of God’s Word. Choose one verse from Philippians 4:8 to meditate on and let it guide your thoughts throughout the day.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of a renewed mind through Christ. Help me to shift my thinking to focus on what is true, noble, and praiseworthy. Teach me to take captive every thought and align it with Your truth. Transform my mind so that I may live in alignment with Your will and experience Your peace. Thank You for the power of Your Word to guide my thoughts and transform my heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
