DAY 7 - IDENTITY: YOU ARE AN HEIR

Question: How have you normally viewed yourself in your relationship with God?

  1. “A slave of a King?”

  2. “A son/daughter of a loving Father?”

Ephesians 1 says: You are chosen, You are loved, You are adopted, You are accepted, You are redeemed & You are forgiven! You are not a slave of a King, You are Sons/daughters of God. You are a Child of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Creator of the universe, the Savior of the world! That’s your identity!

And that's not all! There is another element to your identity that you do not want to miss. YOU ARE AN HEIR!

In Romans 8:11, the Apostle Paul writes, "And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together."

Ephesians 1:11-12 says, "...we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ."

What is an inheritance? It's what you receive by succession or will, as an heir.

I once read a story about a college student in Moldova, named Sergey Sudev. He was a normal college kid working to put himself through school living on about $240 a month. One day, he got a knock on the door by a man in a suit with a briefcase. Sergey let him in to talk. The guy brought him some bad news about his uncle dying. Sergey thought this was odd, because he had only met his uncle a couple of times. The man was a lawyer and informed Sergey his uncle had no heirs. Back when Sergey was a child, he had first met his uncle at a family reunion and left such an impression, his uncle decided to leave his entire fortune of $950 million euros to Sergey. Sergey went from having nothing to having about 1.3 billion dollars in the bank!

Here’s what we learn from Sergey’ story:

  1. Be nice to your uncle at family reunions.

  2. An inheritance like that would change everything. Your life would be radically different.

If you're a follower of Jesus, you believe in Christ, His work on the cross and His resurrection to forgive you of your sin, you're a child of God and you are going to receive an inheritance one day. The Bible is a little vague about what all the inheritance entails, but if God promises to give us an inheritance, then we have to believe it will make that 1.3 billion dollars look a little insignificant.

Here is what scripture says about your inheritance:

I Peter 1:3-4

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, (NKJ)

I Corinthians 2:9

But as it is written: "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him." (NKJ)

Nobody can even begin to imagine what God has prepared for those He loves. It’s beyond our imaginations! However, you can Rest in Christ, knowing your identity is found in him and a great inheritance, beyond your imagination awaits you!
